My Commute

Tonight was a perfect evening for riding the scooter. After walking across campus to return a library book, I made it down 15th Ave., and found my sliver of a parking space. Helmet on, sunglasses in place, wearing flip flops and a t-shirt, I pulled out onto High St. and headed south toward downtown.

Ohio State campus was busy; lots of students walking to and from events. Then came the Short North, with plenty of interesting people to notice as I drove by. The air warm, the sky blue, flying by cars and buses as I made my way into the shadows of the skyscrapers.

I love riding the scooter. Its fun; its relaxing; its engaging and challenging to stay alert and focused while driving. I notice different parts of town. Tonight I saw the new park downtown that is in the place where City Center used to be. Then, as I made my way closer into Grove City, I had to take a short detour that put me into a very interesting neighborhood, with old houses and big yards. I never knew it was right around the corner from our house!

Perhaps my favorite part of the drive home is on the last street before our neighborhood. The speed limit is 45, so I'm cruising around 50. The road turns right, then dips down as it passes over a creek. You don't notice this in your car, but the air temperature above the water is much cooler than the rest of the air. So as I drive over the bridge, the temperature drops at least 10 degrees, and the air feels fresh and very much like summer.

A short drive home from campus, on the last night of classes for my first year of graduate school, can be a memorable and enjoyable experience.
