He Who Fights for Me
"...indeed,
you entered this world to save me,
to free me from the bonds of evil and sin,
and to lead me to your Father's house.
...you are willing
to struggle against the strong powers
which pull me away from you.
Lord, you want to keep me, hold onto me,
fight for me, protect me, help me, support me,
comfort me, and present me to your Father.
it indeed is your divine task not to lose me!
And yet I am free.
I can separate myself from you,
and you will never take this freedom away from me.
Oh, what a wonder of love,
what a mystery of divine grace!"

Prayes for Aleli
There are a few specific things for which people can be praying for Aleli. The first, of course, is her continued growth. Every day that she eats, sleeps, digests, and grows she becomes healthier and stronger and just a little bit closer to coming home.

Praying
Read this poem by Mary Oliver this morning in "Common Prayer," and it was a subtle blessing:
the blue iris, it could be
weeds in a vacant lot, or a few
small stones; just
pay attention, then patch
to make them elaborate, this isn't
a contest but the doorway
another voice may speak.

A Prayer
I use the Mosaic Bible, which comes with various prayers and reflections for each week in the Church calendar, and yesterday I read this prayer.
When our dreams have come true
Because we have dreamed too little,
When we arrived safely
Because we sailed too close to the shore.
With the abundance of things we possess
We have lost our thirst
For the waters of life;
Having fallen in love with life,
We have ceased to dream of eternity
And in our efforts to build a new earth,
We have allowed our vision
Of the new Heaven to dim.
To venture on wider seas
Where storms will show your mastery;
Where losing sight of land,
We shall find the stars.
We ask You to push back
The horizons of our hopes;
And to push into the future
In strength, courage, hope, and love.

Life's Ups and Downs...
The last few days have brought a roller coaster of emotions, and while I know we've all had such experiences, I just wanted to write a share a little about what my family is going through.My older sister, Deidre, had her firstborn - a girl - last week. This is the first child of that generation for my family, making me an uncle for the first time, my parents grandparents for the first time, and all of us very excited.
(The pic on the left is of my brother-in-law, Alex, with his first child - little Skylar!)
Unfortunately, Skylar has struggled to keep food down and was even a little jaundice for a few days. So we were very excited to read on Sunday morning that Skylar went home. She was doing better, eating, and seemed to be in the clear. Skylar was born about 2 weeks early, unexpected, with a few birth complications. But overall the hope was that she was doing very well. Until Sunday night, when she was unresponsive and still losing weight. My dad called to tell me that they had taken her back to the emergency room, and were preparing to do a spinal tap - an extreme procedure on a one-week old infant. We were very concerned for her health, and when I asked my dad the severity of the situation, he said he simply didn't know.

Then Monday morning the report came that Skylar was improving. She was processing nutrients through an IV and was peeing. A good sign for a newborn :)
Up and down. Up and down. Emotions are carried by the events of the day. Thoughts run in a million directions. And this isn't even my child! I can't imagine what my sister or my parents have been going through. I know for a fact that my sister has slept only a handful of hours in the past week.
Throughout all of this, it has been a privilege to have the support and concern of a vast network of friends. Quick posts on Twitter/Facebook, a few text messages, and we know that there are dozens - perhaps even hundreds - of people praying around the world for our family. We sent out the distress signals Sunday night, and Monday morning Skylar is doing better. I don't want to take that for granted and discredit the work of prayer and God's blessing upon little Skylar's life.

But what about when things don't always go the way you want? When the unexpected downturns take you by surprise? Wrestling with God isn't easy; and taking on the challenges and surprises of life can make a person ask more questions about God than directly to God.
Recently, Kellye and I have been reading and talking about the doctrine of God's "holiness." In short, some theologians say that God can do whatever he wants, because he is God. In situations like this, I don't know whether to process the events as that God is making decisions and taking actions as he chooses, and he is Holy, so I just have to accept it. In that case, God is "above" us.
Or perhaps God is "beside" us, upset that Skylar is suffering, and in a way he is suffering along with her. This "beside us" God is more of a comfort to me, but can also be just as frustrating, because why wouldn't this God use more power to help her?
These are the many questions that bombard our minds during the ups and downs of life. I don't have a simple quip to wrap up this post, because I'm still feelings the whiplash effects of the last few days.
Your prayers, advice, and wisdom are always appreciated.

I Cannot Do This Alone
This prayer from Dietrich Bonhoeffer has been a blessing to me today:
O God, early in the morning I cry to you.
Help me to pray
And to concentrate my thoughts on you:
I cannot do this alone.
In me there is darkness,
But with you there is light;
I am lonely, but you do not leave me;
I am feeble in heart, but with you there is help;
I am restless, but with you there is peace.
In me there is bitterness, but with you there is patience;
I do not understand your ways,
But you know the way for me…
Restore me to liberty,
And enable me to live now
That I may answer before you and before me.
Lord, whatever this day may bring,
Your name be praised.

Pray.
Sometimes, when it's all you can do, you realize it's what you should have been doing all along.

Thinking about Haiti
The 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit yesterday has killed an estimated 100,000. No one knows yet how high the death toll will be, nor how devastating and far-reaching the damage is. The reports are heart-breaking and many, many people are unaccounted for.
This is a frustrating time we live in. The reports come in instantaneously and constantly. The images are shocking and the radio reports are overwhelming. The disaster is at the same time far away, but right in my face and in my ears. Haiti is much closer to the United States than Africa, or the far East, but it might as well as far away as the moon when I have to go to work tomorrow, put gas in my car, and continue on with the routines of life.
In the same 10 minutes I can browse pictures of other people's devastation on npr.org, and listen to audio clips of an iTunes album I'm thinking about buying. While my TV plays, muted, and I sit on my couch in my heated house.
Frustrating. Heart-breaking. Convicting.
Wondering about so many things - most of all, if my prayers for the people of Haiti are actually doing anything. And debating how much money to give to which of the dozens of relief organizations. How do I rationalize a percentage of my income to donate to people who have lost 100% of their livelihood?

Please Pray for the Home of Refuge
October 2009 Till the Full Light of Day
![]()
This month I have no stories to tell of newly rescued children, no progress reports to give that will warm the soul. But what I do have is perhaps the most urgent prayer request that we have ever shared with you since the inception of this ministry. If ever there was a time to pray for the Home of Refuge—for the safety of the children AND for our personal wellbeing—it is now! Over the last number of weeks we have come under the most severe persecution we have ever faced, from corrupt government officials, corrupt child protection services and political turmoil that has destabilized the nation, to all-out attacks on both Rosa and I personally, stemming from various individuals and government institutions. We have witnessed in a very real way how Satan uses greed to rage against Truth, Justice and “Religion that God our Father calls pure and faultless.”
On Sept 1st while I was hard at work pouring cement on the farm, several boys from the local school that our children attend brought report that one of our children had been abducted. Dropping everything at once, I immediately got into my truck and rushed to the school! But without any warning, I was apprehended by police and arrested upon my arrival. This caused a great uproar in the community, to the degree that the “locals”, in my defense, blocked the road for 45 minutes so that police could not get through. It was not until special armed forces arrived that the road was opened and I was hauled off to a jail. I spent a day and a half in a jail cell, with no bathroom; my only food and water was that which the American Embassy was gracious enough to bring me. In the best interest of the Home of Refuge and because of the political instability, we cannot go into too many details concerning the persecution against us at this time. I will continue to give you the details as the opportunities arise. However, to briefly update you on the political situation in the country, I will summarize the events of the last couple of months. On June 28th, the Honduran armed forces stormed the presidential palace in the capital city and arrested President Manuel Zelaya, after months of tensions over his endeavors to revoke presidential term limits. He was then exiled to Costa Rica . Later that day the Honduran Congress voted Zelaya out of office, replacing him with Roberto Micheletti. Since that day, there has been rising tension in the country, partly due to the United States’ failure to recognize the current Honduran government as valid and the U.S.’s subsequent discontinuation of all funding to Honduras (except for Humanitarian Aid). Violence in the streets has also increased, with a severe decrease in law and order. The entire country is currently living under martial law, with civil liberties non-existent.
During a time of prayer about the persecutions we are facing, the Holy Spirit told Rosa , “I am with you! Trust Me and I will bring you out like the light of day.” Days later, she was directed to the following verse found in Proverbs 4:18: “The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day.” As we trust our Lord during this critical time, we believe His Word, knowing that Hope does not disappoint and He who promised is Faithful!
We ask at this time that you pray for us with great fervency…and that you continue steadfast in your financial giving. Through those two avenues you can STAND with us in this hour and help speed the cause of righteousness. We know that the trials and tribulations we are undergoing at present are working for us a glory that FAR outweighs them. It is our conviction that just as the local residents who have witnessed the ministry of the Home of Refuge were unwilling to let any injustice come to me that day I was arrested, even now God is vindicating His Great Name and causing all of this to work to the Glory of His Son. As the Scriptures say, “…Thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Him.” (2 Cor. 2:14). We love you each. Be strong in your faith, knowing that He who has called you is FAITHFUL.
For the children,

A prayer for the day...
"Grant me, Lord, not to be anxious about earthly things, but to love things heavenly; and even now, while I am placed among things that are passing away, to hold fast to those that shall endure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen"

The Morning Prayer
Lord God, almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought me in safety to this new day: Preserve me with your mighty power, that I may not fall into sin, nor be overcome by adversity; and in all I do direct me to the fulfilling of your purpose; through Jesus Christ my Lord. Amen. †

A midday prayer

Back home
It's been a long and crazy Christmas week. Flying home from Guatemala on Monday included several adventures like running to catch our flight in Chicago, and then not having our luggage when we finally made it to Columbus after midnight. But our bags arrived Tuesday night, in time for us to do several loads of laundry, pack again and leave for family Christmas in Virginia. It was really good to see Kellye's grandparents who have had some health struggles in the past months, and it was a lot of fun opening presents and doing a "dirty santa" exchange with the cousins. But then on Thursday, I came down with a pretty nasty flu bug that kept me in bed almost all day, aching and congested. Sleeping all day led to little sleep and bad dreams all night, but I still felt well enough this morning to drive home with Kellye. So now, finally, Saturday night December 27th, we are home for Christmas break.
"My Lord God I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that my desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope that I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone."

A good word
I had the blessed pleasure of knowing Julie Jones for several years.
First while going to GCCS school board meetings, and this year during
brief conversations at the receptionist desk at school. Her heart was
always so evident, her questions of concern were sincere, and her hard
work for the school and on behalf of her children benefitted all. I
always appreciated her hugs and mentions I prayer. In the last few
months as the cancer treatments took a toll, she continued to work
hard and with a smile. But she also wouldn't hesitate to ask for
prayer, and her family and those who loved her so much need those
prayers now. And so even across the world, I lift my heart to take
away even a fraction of the burden. And God's heart is so much bigger.
His love covers even the profound pain of human loss, and the promise
of the resurrection is not a vain dream but our constant hope and
moment-by-moment life breath that will one day refill all of our lungs
with praise for God and the laughter of long anticipated reunions.
We will see Julie again. And so it is well, even now.

The ultimate answer button
Whatever our approach to the Bible, wemust concede that God is big enough to handle our curiosity and ourquestions. In fact, God is calling out to us to ask the toughquestions! I often wonder if He doesn’t feel like a frustrated teacher:climbing on desks, shouting through verses of Shakespeare, dying for usto be curious.This is why I think God shows up in the unexpected places and, inversely, is hard to find in the very traditional and typical religious expressions - it keeps us seeking and asking the hard questions. This benediction of St. Francis has been on the surface of my consciousness for a few days now...and I'm almost afraid to continue to pray it, expect I know that I just have to:
Discouraging doubt, discouragingquestions, offering a perfect formula as the answer to all of ourGod-shaped questions simply does not reflect the immensity of the I AM.In fact, I believe it stunts our spiritual growth and places our God,yes our Jesus, in a very unattractive and limited human-size box.
May God bless us with discomfort at easy answers, half-truths, and superficial relationships, so that we may live deep within our hearts.
May God bless us with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people, so that we may work for justice, freedom and peace.
May God bless us with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, starvation and war, so that we may reach out our hands tocomfort them and turn their pain into joy.
And may God bless us with enough foolishness to believe that we can make a difference in this world, so that we can do what others claim cannot be done.

Waking up...
It's a new day, and all the more so given last night's election and the historic result. The country is awash with fresh optimism.
Nevertheless, I often wake up - like I did today - feeling insecure, uncertain, anxious, helpless, and like I'm just not ready to face another day. So here is my prayer for today, for me and for you:
Enfold me in your love.
Let my heart become one with yours.
